 | Did you ever hear the old saying "The pen is mightier than the sword"? It means that words people write and the ideas they express can be more important and more powerful than all the weapons used in the war. In the case of President Thomas Jefferson, that old saying is very true. Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence, never led soldiers into battle with swords. But with his pen, made of a quill feather, he changed the world forever. | | | If Thomas Jefferson's only accomplishment had been writing the Declaration of Independence, with the famous words, "all men are created equal," he would have been renowned as one of our country's Founding Fathers. But Thomas Jefferson was much more than just a famous writer. If he had only been America's third president, he would be remembered as an important political leader. If he'd only designed and built his home called Monticello, he would he known as a great architect. And if he'd only thought up such clever devices as a swivel chair, a dumbwaiter, and a revolving book stand, he would be thought of as a remarkable inventor.
Writer, president, architect, inventor - all these words describe the man whose face is on the front of the nickel. If Thomas Jefferson had been any one of these, we would still consider him a very important person. But he was all these things- and many more. It makes you wonder if Thomas Jefferson ever had a moment of rest.
